It's rather easy to do the plugs on the LA1. Since it's a pushrod engine, the plugs are on the sides of the heads, unlike a SOHC or DOHC engine where they're on the top and go down into the heads.

i'd do plugs on a 3x00 any day of the week.. over the ones on my DOHC EJ25, straight out the sides pointing towards the wheels and a 1/2" between the body and the valve cover to work with..


i've done the 3x00 both ways. with the coil packs in place and removing them.. with them in place it requires a little more blind finding the hole..

Geez that sucks. I don't think the drive shaft has ever come off on my dads truck.

Just got a call from the dealership. My rear end seized up and shucked the drive shaft off. He quoted $1700, fml.

Ya I got a 3.3 flat 6, no damn room to take the coil on plug off on the rear most 2 plugs. Well there is but its very very difficult. they say there are holes in the subframe you should be able to run the extension through so you can get them from the wheel wells but I never bothered to pull the wheels to see

Ya you are going to be much better off taking it to an independent pay a few hundred in labor and get a used, rear end.

What year is your truck, looks like mid- to late 90's in pic

Find a local mechanic they may charge a few hundred for labor, but not 1000's. I looked and found for any 90's 1500 complete rear end for 150-450

I've seen used axles for those trucks around $350-$450 in boneyards.

Going to need more info to find what you need, is it 10 bolt, or 14 bolt rear cover? is it 3.42 gears or 3.73?

It's a 99 Silverado K1500

10 bolt, 3.73 ratio.

Local shop just quoted me $1000 after labor. That's if they find one around me. Thats a whole rear end and drive shaft (used).

i would find a local junkyard and get the parts and just install yourself cant be too hard if you have basic tools.jacks.stands....oh and this time of year a heated garage

I'm trying to find one myself right now. We have all the basic tools and all of that plus a space heater for the garage.

that and why they say you needed a new driveshaft when you can just remove the broken U-joint and replace with new from new axle?
did you drag it for a while making it unbalanced??

Well I'm sure it slamming on the pavement at 60 mph didnt help much.

Neighbor of mine had a grey 99 that dropped the driveshaft for no reason at all. I'd make sure you're sure it's got a bad rear end.

That's why Im having someone else check it out. I would think if the rear end seized up then it would have been a pain to get on the tow truck, but it rolled right on it. I'm not sure I believe the dealership quite yet.

only way i can really see the rear diff failing and seizing up is lack of oil
