horrible gas mileage

a friend haas a 2000 grand am 3.4 ltr, when he drives normally he gets average gas mileage. if he drives hard, he can empty the tank in 15 minutes, from f to e in 15 mins. no fuel leaking, no smoke from exhaust. any ideas?

locoman99 is infamous around these parts, but not in a good way
10+ gallons in 15 minutes? I assure you a 3.4 cannot burn fuel at that rate. There is no mechanical issue that would present only the symptoms you describe.

Are you sure that the fuel gauge is working properly? I seen gauges on GAs n GPs that read that they are emepty but the car had plenty of gas.
I know that my car is HORRIBLE on gas, but what you described is IMPOSSIBLE.

when it says it's on E just take it to the gas station and see exactly how much gas you can put back in it

i agree a 3.4 cannot burn 10+ gallons in 14 min. we topped off the tank twice. when the gauge to E after the fifteen min, we put 12 gallons back into the tank. there's no gas in the oil. the car hold fuel pressure when the car is off

Perhaps you've confused your friends GA with a nitro funny car?

Easy fix, don't drive hard.

Seriously though, it's a 14 gallon tank and even when I drove mine at an average of 125 mph from Ramstein Air Base to Spangdahlem Air Base I still had about 1/4 tank left. That's nearly 80 miles of actual "hard driving" and it took me 40 minutes to use approximately 10 gallons.

So if you went through 12 gal. in only 15 minutes there are really only 3 possibilities:

1. You have a massive leak somewhere and you are dumping fuel (should be able to smell that even while driving.)
2. You have a broken fuel gauge
3. You are seriously off on your estimations/exaggerations
