Cool Installing switch in rearview mirror to disable map lights when doors open

I've always been a bit frustrated that you cant have the map lights off when opening doors or removing the key from the ignition. I'm thinking that I could probably change this by installing an on/off switch that will cut the power to the lights.

Would it be as simple as it sounds? Just splice in an on/off switch before the wires split to the two lamps? I'd like to pick up a rearview next time I'm at the junkyard and disassemble to see if i can fit a switch somewhere on the back of the unit. Ideally I'm thinking about using one of the switches from the gutted rearview for consistency, and take my time with it so it would almost look factory. Then again these things are probably not meant to be taken apart...

My main question stands in bold but if anyone has tried messing with the rearview in other ways I'd like to hear your opinions.

Thanks!

theres 3 wires going into the back of the mirror.....
one is a constant +
one is a ground that goes to the switches
one is a ground that goes to the doors

in a sense when you flip the switch to turn on a map light your connecting the ground and completing the circuit.

same thing goes for when you open a door it grounds out and completes the circuit.

just pull the one wire out of the plug and be done with it

I feel if the dome light has an option to be completely turned off even with doors open (mine is always off) then the map lights should have that option as well. When things don't function the way I want them to I like to find a way to change that if possible. I'm sure most of you can relate to that.

I have some other more colorful lighting mods in my head that I'm bouncing around but I plan on keeping the map lights white so I can still use them while driving without accidentally pulling over the car in front of me (and subsequently being arrested). This means wiring them to the dome switch for "off" function would not work for me as I'll eventually be installing blue lights in the dome and will then use the "door" function for those.

I realize if I do it my way it means that I would have to hit at least two switches to turn on the maps and I'm perfectly OK with that. My understanding of vehicle electrical systems is a bit abstract, so I just wanted to run it by some of the more experienced folk to see if this would be a viable option.

Thanks for the info, your car is very inspiring btw

So correct me if I'm wrong, but if I pull the ground wire that goes to the doors, will this also disable the lights from going on when the key is removed from the ignition? Seems to make sense if there are only three wires. If that is the case then this would save me a lot of trouble.

I'll give it a shot and report back.

I'm not too far from you actually, I bounce between LA and OC depending on work. I was actually out in your area about month ago for the first time in years, forgot how fun Ortega can be.

OK I just pulled the black wire directly next to the power (black/white stripe) and it did exactly what I was looking for. The map lights don't turn on when doors open or when key is pulled from the ignition, but they still function normally when the map light buttons are pushed. For anyone wondering when the dimmer is turned to the full "ON" position the lights do not light up. The only way to turn them on is by pushing the buttons, so that works perfect for my intentions. This can all easily be reversed by replacing the wire back in the correct fitting.

Thanks for the help! I was way overthinking this one so you saved me some work there, really appreciate it.
