Radar Detectors, anyone use them?

Well I'm tired of getting pulled over. What are some good radar detectors that are able to detect the most recent lasers? Are they firmware upgradable? What is the best brand/model to get? What do you guys use?

I'm going to need to get one for the new car. The cops around here play too many games.

Cobra is good. But expensive depending what you want. Mine sht on me years back havent had one for 2 years and I havent got pulled over. Honestly. Its better to look with your eyes then trust some plastic. Most of the time its to late when your detector goes off. Other times it can warn you before hand but most of the time its a last minute warning. Lol

Valentine1, worth the price and will pay for them selves with savings of tickets and insurance costs.

Passports are not as expensive but you really get what you pay for. My sister has had her Passport for years and loves it.

VALENTINE ONE

more than once, i've picked up a "Ka" radar signal (exclusively used by the police here) at more than a mile away!
this week actually, i was getting a warning while on the far side of an overpass, and around a corner, a mile away!!!! So there was absolutely no line-of-sight, either horizontally, or vertically, with those obstacles in the way.
i was so amazed when i finally passed the cop writing a ticket, i really thought about turning around and retracing my path to make a video showing how effective V1 is.
now your thread really makes me sad i didn't do it.

extreme examples like this have happened more than once. i wouldn't even consider another brand.

yes it picks up laser, but it is the nature of "laser" that there is no "warning" though...

Exactly. My friends have radar detectors and still get tickets. I've never owned one and haven't gotten a ticket. 5 over almost everywhere I go and cops don't care. I'll never waste money one these things.

I would agree. It's been over a year since I've gotten a ticket. The only ticket I've gotten is for speeding. But I've also been pulled over for red grille lighting (when I had it), and recently for tint, noise, license plates, and minor speeding (all just warnings thankfully)

Just looking to have an extra layer of protection against tickets.

I've never used them nor do I plan to start. Most smart cops will just turn on their radars once they see someone coming.

I've got a beltronics v995, and really like it. Even though I rarely speed anymore it's nice to knowwh en cops are around. If i was in the market today id probably get a beltronics sti, or a passport 9500. Radar roy is worth a Google search to help you decide

unless you're on an empty two lane road, if they zap a car in front of you, even if that other car is a half mile in front of you, you've got a warning.

If you need one, I can dig out my old Passport 8500 radar detector..thing is a beast..got it in storage at my parents house but I can get it back easily enough.

Only downside to having one, you will speed less..once you see how much is out there it isn't worth it. To be noted, if your local cops use laser..no radar detector can save you.

Also I know for my model and I feel like a few others, there used to be a thread here for a custom mount you could get to mount it directly under your rearview mirror. It also had a custom power source you could use to tap into the wires for your lights/mirror. Much simpler than a lower mounting (and more effective), and didn't cost much..

Other than the Passport 8500 and 9500, the Valentine V1 is the only radar detector I know of that is better. Even used they still run close to $400..they don't lose value at all.

For a while there, V1 was offering to pay for your speeding ticket if it didn't warn you in time, I am sure that policy is out the window. Some of the radar guns out there have an instant on feature. They don't send out K or Ka band signal until they pull the trigger to target the car they want to scan, but some of the top of line detectors can tell if the radar gun is on.

Some cops also have radar detector detectors and thus the high end radar detectors have radar detector detector detectors built in. I know quite a few states that it is not illegal to own a radar detector but it is illegal to operate a radar detector.

^^^^damn that statement made me sound like captain slow, putting you all to sleep like James May.

Radar detector is an extra layer of protection, but it won't help if you get hit with laser if they have a speed trap set up. They do make laser jammers though. They send out intermittent laser pulses that give an error reading to the laser gun and give you a visual/audio alert on the unit when it gets hit with a laser signal so you know someone is checking your speed. You can set them up so you manually turn it off after you've slowed down/checked your speed, or it turns itself off after a preset number of seconds.

The best protection of course would not to be speeding, but we all make occasional mistakes. And of course sometimes you get pulled over even when you aren't speeding. I did a few weeks ago and the cop had no good reason for pulling me over so I left without a ticket, but it was still an annoyance. Second best protection IMO would be both a radar detector and laser jammer. There are a couple newer model detectors out there that also sync up with your smart phone via bluetooth and use an app that warns others of speed traps and alerts you when there is one in your area. Don't know how effective they are since they depend on the number of other people locally using the same system... but if you are super paranoid... . Of course you need to check on state laws where ever you live on legality of both devices.

Makes perfect sense to me. Better detection devices in military applications can win wars. Whoever's got the fastest switching processor can theoretically build the best "radar," then iirc, error correction and noise rejection comes into play.

When I was a kid I saw plans for a high voltage generator you could easily build (similar to a Tesla coil) that stated it was illegal to run it unshielded. It could wipe out radio reception over a wide area. The thing was, the FCC could locate such a device very easily, and would be on you like stink on ****.

Our E55, SLK and Stealth all have built in Escort 9500ci's. I love the fact that the sensors are outside the car and the only parts in the car is a small control panel and display. The 9500ci is a little pricy, but it works amazingly well.
